Amidst all the usual solicitations for male enhancement pharmaceuticals and financial partnerships with Nigerian widows, we received a piece of "electronic mail" from the Reston Association today, sharing the schedule for community meetings about the awesome $65 million rec center proposed for Brown's Chapel Park in North Reston, now widely believed to be the frontrunner to host the 2024 Summer Games. These four meetings, according to the "electronic message," will revolve around these three questions:
1. What do you think about the idea of a year-round recreational facility in Reston?Actually, that appears to be four questions, but who's counting? Anyhoo, here are the times and locations for the meetings.
2. If you support the idea, what kinds of services would you like to see? What are your questions?
3. If you’re not supportive, what are your concerns?
Hunters Wood/Dogwood District, hosted by Cheryl Beamer, RA Secretary & District RepresentativeSadly, there's no word in the "electronic message" on whether spokespuppies will be allowed to voice their opinions.

I won't be at the meeting that day because my master told me that I'm a smart dog and he's going to take me to the vet and get me tutored. Heh-heh. I'm a lucky dog.
ReplyDeleteLet's be sure to have these meetings after school lets out, after the Little League season ends and when people are on vacation because RA wants the appearance of community input and not the real thing.
ReplyDeleteThe reason these meeting could not be scheduled in the fall is what exactly?
Is there a sale at Walmart on oversized public works projects that expires on Hound Dog Day (8/2 for the uninitiated)?
"What do you think of the idea of a year round recreational facility in Reston?"?? Are you kidding me?? Stacking the deck is exactly how Reston Association got into this mess. Robin, if you are going to step up and play "developer" with the big boys - ask the tough questions. "If you want a rec center how much are you willing to pay and what open space are you willing to bull doze to do it." Otherwise, your process that you slowed down to get more community input (which really means that you cancel the one and only after-the fact-meeting with the local neighborhood) will look pretty suspect. Okay more suspect. Which is tough to do.
ReplyDeleteSo we paid $92,000 to consultants to answer the wrong questions. Now lets spend the summer answering equally irrelevant questions. Let's ask what we are willing to pay? who should pay it? are we willing to destroy parkland?
ReplyDeleteAnon 1, are you going to be away on vacation for every single one of those meetings? Every time is a bad time. During the school year everyone is "too busy." In the summer everyone is "on vacation." They could've not had the meetings at all... at least it gives people a chance to go tell them not to bulldoze the park. If you'll be on vacation send e-mails or call them.
ReplyDeleteI like how they only want questions from supporters. (re: question 2)
ReplyDeleteAs a resident of Fairfax County that lives 350m from the Reston border, I am excited about this Rec Center. It's getting to be a pain at Cub Run, with all of the people from underserved Loudoun crowding the pool... where do Restonians go swimming in the winter? Florida?
