Behold the scene of carnage at Restonian World Headquarters after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake centered between Richmond and Charlottesville hit shortly before 2 this afternoon. By some miracle, this "web log's" Atari 400-powered server survived the catastrophe and is still churning along.
A smaller pre-dawn earthquake centered in Maryland hit the region last July. Fairfax County officials have already tweeted that there's no known infrastructure damage in the region, though this apparently will be delaying happy hour at Restonian World Headquarters. Update: The damage reports are streaming in:
And here is some video of buildings being evacuated in Reston Town Center, if you can see it between the annoying pop-up ads:
And from the Twitter machine, a shocking image of the devastation at the South Lakes Safeway:
It's already been upgraded to 5.9 in magnitude. Lots of people here ran out of the building. Maybe they lived in the Bay Area before.
ReplyDeleteWorse yet, I can't text. I CAN'T TEXT!
ReplyDeleteMy building closed for the day. Not entirely sure why.
ReplyDeleteWhere can I get my "I Lived Through the Great Reston Quake of 2011" t-shirt?
ReplyDeleteLive team coverage courtesy of Mrs. Peasant, who just returned from a (pre-scheduled) run to the Safeway in Hunter Woods:
ReplyDelete"The aisles were littered here and there with a few fallen cans and bottles. All the employees ran out of the store when the earthquake hit."
Any reports yet of tsunami damage on the Great Lakes of Reston? Was the statue of Dear Leader by Lake Anne swept away?
I was putting my boys down for a nap when I felt like someone was shaking my face around the room. Mr. Whispers and Shouts' bathroom reading fell off his shelf and the boys' Little People(tm)barn started mooing. The ice cube maker rattled in the freezer. The boys learned a few new words from me. It was all very dramatic.

ReplyDeleteAre Cathy's Section 8 housing folks ok? Did she called the Prez and declared an emergency in the Hunter Mill District? You can't lose that vital support in the upcoming election.
ReplyDeleteOh great, now I have to buy earthquake insurance!
ReplyDeleteWhen the world started moving, I thought I was having a spontaneous orgasm. Then, once I realized the sensation was coming through the bottom of my feet and chair, I realized this was only a little trembler. I was majorly bummed.
ReplyDeleteOn the up side, it was nice to leave the office in the middle of a beautiful afternoon and ride my bike all the way from Washington back home.
Actually you may have trouble with earthquake insurance. I bought it when I first moved here in 1996. Three or four years ago, Allstate notified me that they were no longer offering earthquake insurance in this area.
ReplyDeleteGood planning on their part.
